Mylochromis melanotaenia (Pictures used with permission of Yann Dupuy)

Mylochromis melanotaenia is living in reasonable shallow water, at depths of 15 to 40 metres, in muddy environments nearby river endings. They can be found in the southern part of the lake and along the eastcoast to Makonde in the northern part.

The males of these species can grow to 20 cm, females stay smaller, they grow to about 15 cm.

In the lake Mylochromis melanotaenia is searching for food on the sandy bottom. This is a species which probably lives on snails. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix.

You can best keep this species with multiple females and other big species in a large tank.
